CHICAGO (AP) - Justin Verlander turned in one of his most effective outings this year and once again beat the White Sox, leading the Detroit Tigers past Chicago 7-1 Friday night. The contending Tigers won for the fifth time in six games. Chicago has lost nine of 10. The former AL MVP allowed one run and nine hits in seven innings. It was the first time this year that he allowed fewer than two runs in a game.

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Connor Cook threw three touchdown passes in the first quarter to help No. 8 Michigan State to an easy 45-7 victory over Jacksonville State on Friday night. Cook completed his first nine passes in a nearly flawless performance.

CHICAGO (AP) - The Detroit Tigers have promoted right-hander Evan Reed from Triple-A Toledo after a judge dismissed rape charges against the pitcher last week. Reed, 28, was facing third-degree criminal sexual conduct charges before a judge said Aug. 21 that the testimony of the woman who accused him wasn't credible and prosecutors failed to show that force or coercion took place. Reed is 0-1 with a 4.88 ERA in 27 games with the Tigers this season.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Michigan has a chance to even its series with Appalachian State. The Wolverines were beaten by the Mountaineers in 2007 and became the first Top 25 college football team to lose to a second-tier program. Three years ago, Michigan decided to take another shot at beating Appalachian State and scheduled a rematch Saturday at the Big House.
