    Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg flew to Israel via a commercial El Al flight despite an FAA ban on U.S.-based airlines flying to Tel Aviv. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met Bloomberg on the tarmac outside the El Al jet Wednesday at Ben Gurion International Airport.

    When researchers in Canada and Harvard University examined the results of a survey that asked “In general, how satisfied are you with your life?” they found that New York City is the unhappiest city in the country. The data compiled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that Pittsburgh, Louisville, Milwaukee and Detroit round out the list.

Mayoral press secretary Phil Walzak said de Blasio moved the nine-day trip's departure date from Friday to Saturday "to attend to city business." The mayor's announcement came shortly after he addressed the Thursday death of a Staten Island man in police custody.

    The unions representing workers for the Long Island Rail Road are set to strike beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Sunday. On Friday, Mayor Bill de Blasio and his wife and children will head to Italy on a 10-day vacation. While the time off had been in the works for the First Family of New York City for some time, it was not clear until Monday that the LIRR would essentially be shut down due to striking workers. De Blasio says he's going overseas anyway.

    The sunset on Friday and Saturday will be extraordinary as it will create the twice-a-year phenomenon known as 'Manhattanhenge.' The term was coined by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson.  The spectacle occurs when the sun sets and lines itself with the street grid of Manhattan, illuminating all east -west streets at the same time.

    A large inflatable Rubik’s Cube is sailing around New York City to celebrate the birthday of its inventor and the toy’s 40th anniversary. Hungarian professor Erno Rubik is credited with inventing the world’s best-selling toy in 1974.  The colorful, solid cube, twists and turns, but does not break or fall apart. To commemorate both days, a tugboat is towing the Cube around city landmarks.

De Blasio, a Democrat, made the establishment of the ID card a central campaign. With its passage, New York City is now creating what will be the country's largest municipal identification card system.

They're joined by Vivica A. Fox and Mark McGrath, along with Kelly Osbourne, Judah Friedlander ("30 Rock"), Andy Dick, Judd Hirsch and Perez Hilton.
