Target Fireworks Display Set for June 21 on Detroit River

Hundreds of thousands of spectators will line the shores of the Detroit River to take in the Target Fireworks display, set for Monday, June 21 at 10:06 p.m.

The Detroit Police Department is employing various measures to ensure that spectators of all ages will continue to have a pleasurable time at major events in the city of Detroit.

  • Parents are advised to abide by the City of Detroit’s curfew ordinance and should not drop children and teens off and leave. In addition, because of the restricted vehicular access into downtown, parents will not be able to pick them up.
  • The current curfew is: 15 years old and under – 10 p.m.; 16 and 17 years old – 11 p.m.

HART PLAZA

  • Hart Plaza and all other viewing sites will be closed when the desired capacity is reached.
  • No pets, BBQ grills, alcohol or other contraband will be allowed on Hart Plaza. All coolers are subject to search. No open fires are permitted.
  • After dark, Hart Plaza will be illuminated with large floodlights up to the time that the fireworks are released. The floodlights will be reactivated following the conclusion of the fireworks display.
  • More than 100 stationary cameras will be deployed to monitor the crowds at various locations. A number of mobile cameras will also be utilized. These cameras will assist in determining the desired capacity of certain areas not just in the downtown areas but at all locations.

DOWNTOWN

  • Based on crowd capacity and vehicle traffic, Detroit police officers will close downtown streets south of Fort (between Rosa Parks on the west and I-375 on the east)
  • From 6 a.m.–2 a.m., no parking will be permitted on Michigan or south of Michigan (between Rosa Parks on the west and I-375 on the east). NO PARKING signs will be posted.
  • Beginning at 2 p.m., Atwater will be closed from Chene to Third.
  • No pedestrian traffic or spectator viewing will be allowed on the entire length of RiverWalk for the Fireworks.
  • No spectator viewing will be permitted on E. Jefferson from Woodward to Randolph, or island.
  • Parking garages and surface lots located south of Fort will be accessible during the evening depending on traffic flow.

MISSING CHILDREN

The City of Detroit expects a large crowd for the fireworks display, and City officials are reminding parents to be mindful and watchful of their children during this family outing.
All missing children found shall be taken to one of the following locations:

Downtown Area
Hart Plaza (lower level)

Belle Isle
Detroit Police Department Harbor Master Station, located on Riverbank Drive, Belle Isle, next to Shelter #8

Riverside Park
Southwestern District

BEST VIEWING LOCATIONS

The following locations have been identified as the best viewing sites:

Hart Plaza
Belle Isle (viewing from the MacArthur Bridge will not be permitted)
Chene Park, St. Aubin Park, Riverside Park, Mt. Elliot Park, Tri-centennial Park
Owen Park and Erma Henderson Park

BELLE ISLE

  • Belle Isle will still be accessible for normal activity on June 21.
  • Belle Isle will be closed when the desired capacity is reached.
  • The will be no viewing and/or parking on the Belle Isle MacArthur Bridge.
  • There will be no overnight parking or camping on Belle Isle, Sunday, June 20.
  • On Sunday, June 20, the 10 p.m. ordinance, which closes access to Belle Isle, shall be enforced.
  • Access to Belle Isle will occur no sooner than 6 a.m. on Monday, June 21. At which time, parking will be allowed on Sunset around to the Strand and in the paddock for a fee. No parking will be allowed around the Fountain.
  • Tents can be posted in designated areas on Belle Isle ONLY on Monday, June 21. All canopies and tents shall be made of a see-through mesh material. This shall be enforced.
  • On the evening of Sunday, June 20, the following streets will be closed until Tuesday, June 22 at 6 a.m.: From the Message Board on Sunset, down Fountain Dr., around the Fountain and out to the Strand. Casino Way to Sunset and Picnic Way to the Strand will also be closed. No overnight parking will be permitted.
