Every parent has felt that panic when a note arrives from the school nurse announcing a lice outbreak. An infestation can disrupt a household for weeks - cleaning all the laundry, bedding, winter coats, stuffed animals - and can cost hundreds of dollars to cure. This school year, be prepared with some helpful tips on how to prevent and get rid of lice from Risa Barash, The Lice Lady.

Tips to Keep Your Child Lice-Free:

  • Recognize the symptoms of head lice which include itching at the scalp and small, red bumps or sores on the neck and/or scalp.
  • Do NOT wash the hair every day. Lice can attach easier to a squeaky clean hair shaft than a dirty one. Build up of natural oils and hair products can coat the hair shaft making attaching more difficult.
  • Keep long hair up pony tail or in a braid and purchase hair products that use organic herbs and oils. There are certain ones on the market that have been proven to repel head lice.
  • Dont share! Teach your child never to share hats, combs/brushes, ties, towels, helmets, iPod earbuds etc.
  • If your child plays sports, do not share helmets - if they must, wipe down with a wet cloth. Even better, just buy them their own. It will give you peace of mind.
  • Beware of the popular Princess Parties. The tiaras, boas and costumes can harbor lice - make sure wipe down or wash properly.
  • For sleepovers, make sure your kids bring their own pillows and sleeping bags. Also, make sure to advise parents that its best if the kids dont sleep so close together!
  • Finally, do weekly head checks. Focus on the hot spots - nape of neck, behind ears, part lines.
