SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -- Walnuts are high in fiber and a great source of healthy fats. Now, a new study finds they may also help slow the growth of prostate cancer.
University of California researchers gave mice the human equivalent of three ounces a day of walnuts. By the end of the study, their tumors were about 50 percent smaller than tumors in the control group mice.
As a bonus, the walnut-fed mice also had lower levels of bad cholesterol.
The study authors think walnuts work because they're a perfect blend of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, polyphenols and antioxidants.
Eating more walnuts as part of a healthy diet, along with regular exercise and maintaining an appropriate weight may be the best strategy for helping prevent prostate and other forms of cancer.
