myFOXdetroit.com - Tips on how to land a job in the field of customer service and ways to better execute the job once you've landed it.

Michael Poulos, CEO of Michigan First Credit Union stopped by the Fox 2 Job Shop to share his insights on providing better customer service.

He offered the following tips and ideas that should be stressed during when in an interview when the topic of customer service is raised:

Kindness matters: Don't underestimate the value of personal warmth and connection in any service-related business.

You win and lose as a team: If a customer has a negative experience, it reflects poorly on the organization. Michigan First team members have to be team players and support each other to succeed.

Listen to your customers: When someone asks, “do you work here?,” they are really asking for help. Be aware of what they are communicating and make every effort to address their needs.

Put yourself in the customers’ shoes: We’ve all had painful customer service experiences. Consider what went wrong and what a company could have done to turn the situation into a positive—then bring that mentality to work with you everyday.

Admit mistakes…: As hard as we try, we’re never going to be perfect, but great customer service providers admit when they’ve made an error instead of trying to cover it up.

· …and go out of your way to fix them: They also go the extra step of working to let the customer know they’re valued by giving them something they wouldn’t expect. At Michigan First, we have MoneyPerks rewards points that can be redeemed to waive fees or reduce loan rates—if our members have an issue we often give them extra points to let them know we care about them.
