ROSEVILLE, Mich. - A fire quickly ripped though a Roseville apartment building Tuesday morning and forced at least 20 people from their homes. At least one cat died in the fire, but no tenants were hurt.
Engau Jackson says he barely made it out and had to jump from the top floor. He now has a logical question.
"Who burns a candle overnight," Jackson asked.
"It just looks good. It smells good, and that's what it was," said Afam Akoma.
However, that tenant, who says he started the fire, is not the only one who made a bad decision. Some of the other tenants told us they didn't hear smoke alarms because they disabled them since they were making too much noise and going off too frequently.
However, most of Akoma's neighbors say they're not angry with him. They're grateful because what he did after the fire started saved their lives.
"I went knocking on my neighbors' apartments," Akoma said.
"He could've been... scared and maybe just ran out himself and forget about everyone else. He choose to wake up everyone," said one woman.
While these tenants may now need a new place to live, this fire is a valuable lesson they'll never forget.
