myFOXDetroit.com Staff - A local business could soon provide an earth-friendly product to help with the relief efforts in Haiti.
They're called "e-coolers." The product is designed, developed and manufactured in Oak Park.
The carboard-based coolers are a new division of Royal Container Corp. It's a proud Michigan business that dates back to 1943.
Justin Mooter is General Manager. His grandfather Joseph Mooter was the company's founder.
Mooter told Fox 2 News, "I think (my grandfather) would be pretty shocked that corrugated boxes can hold water. I think he'd be pretty happy."
E-coolers work like any other cooler. They hold ice and drinks and when the ice melts, they don't leak.
Chad Bush, e-cooler salesman said, "It can hold the water. It can stay waterproof."
The secret is a wax alternative and the cooler's design. It's something the company's spent eight years testing and perfecting and now e-coolers are catching on. They have major national clients who love that the coolers are earth friendly, reusable and recylable.
"People weren't aware that styrofoam was this bad for the environment. There is an alternative for styrofoam," added Bush.
The company is working to manufacture a similar type of cooler for the Red Cross to use in their relief efforts in Haiti. As many as 250-thousand could be headed to the earthquake zone.
Usually, e-coolers are only sold in bulk but a limited number are available for Fox 2 viewers, for five dollars a piece.
