UNDATED - A Detroit couple refused to let a poor economy get in the way of their business dreams. Now, they're sticking it to the naysayers with their creative concept.

"One night, my husband and I were sitting up late," said Candice Franklin.

"I just started brainstorming and just thinking of an idea," said Greg Franklin.

"Then, he (said), 'Remind me to tell you something in the morning,'" Candice Franklin said.

That something was a classic sneaker, but Greg Franklin's take on it has a twist. It's fancy footwear made out of hook and loop material with more than 120 different designs to attach.

"We started brainstorming and then we did our homework. Basically searching on the internet and searching around for stores to see if there was a product like this, and there wasn't," said Candice Franklin.

"That's when Sticky Kicks came about," said Greg Franklin.

Custom kicks great for kids and grandmas, too.

"You can put whatever you want to put on your shoe," Candice Franklin said.

From paint pallets to ballet slippers, football to fire trucks.

Start to finish, Sticky Kicks took about two years to complete from getting the patent, artist and manufacturer.

"It's been a lot of hard work," said Greg Franklin.

"It's been a lot of fun," said Candice Franklin.

No one gets anywhere all by themselves. Candice and Greg have a great support system of family and friends, and that's why Sticky Kicks stuck.

With job loss and layoffs running rampant in metro Detroit, starting your own business could be the answer. So, if you have a good idea, Greg says, "Go ahead and go for it."

"Take a step forward. Take that one step forward and, I guess, lean out of faith," Candice Franklin said.

"If you don't have the money, someone else will, and they might want to go in with you and then there you go," Greg Franklin said. "You can't give up."
