There is big news about foreclosures as a massive probe is being launched and our state is involved. Michigan officials are joining with other states to investigate mortgage lenders to see if they rubber stamped foreclosure documents sending thousands of homeowners out onto the streets without ever reading those papers. Some mortgage workers say they did it thousands of times a month.
Dianne Reichel is a counselor at Greenpath Debt Solutions. We asked her what people should do if they're in the foreclosure process.
"Anybody that's in the foreclosure process needs to reach out and make contact with their servicer. They need to ask them if they have any kind of work out plan available so that they can get the mortgage back on track," said Reichel.
Greenpath holds sessions for people who are falling behind on their mortgage payments. We understand the number of sessions is up about eight-percent this year. What do people really get out of those sessions?
"Basically, we're there to educate people and help them through the process. So, we let you know what the whole foreclosure process is, what your options are that are available to you, and, if necessary, we can help you make that contact with the servicer and make sure that all of your paperwork is in order and just walk you through that process," Reichel said.
It's not too late for people to take some action. Some who may be nearing the foreclosure process may have action taken by the state attorney general's office and their investigation. Others can attend one of Greenpath's housing delinquency sessions. Call 1-800-550-1961 for more information.
