And Jan has some good advice about what not to do with holiday food.
Leftovers are not healthy for our pets While it's tempting to share the Holiday spirit with our canine friends, it's not recommended. Don't feed your dog turkey bones and dispose of leftovers carefully. The bones can get stuck in the throat or puncture the stomach.
Human food is often too rich which can lead to nausea, vomiting and diarrhea in pets. Feeding table scraps can also lead to obesity and bad habits such as begging at the dinner table.
Some foods can be dangerous when ingested by dogs such as: chocolate, macadamia nuts, avocados, raisins and grapes.
Be mindful of Christmas decorations. Pets are attracted to bright and shiny objects. If they are ingested it could lead to punctures or perforations.
