Positive Dog Training Techniques

(WJBK) - The Detroit Kennel Club Dog Shows at Cobo Center are just around the corner and in-studio Tuesday was author and trainer Beth Duman, and dog Charlie Darwin, to share some positive training techniques, along with some highlights of the DKC dog shows.

Beth has this to say about positive dog training:

  • Dog training is critical to a long, happy and safe relationship with your canine friend.
  • Take a positive approach to dog training and it will become enjoyable as you build a relationship with your dog.
  • Positive dog training is successful because animals tend to keep doing things that are rewarding and stop doing things that are not rewarded or ignored.
  • Positive dog training is more than just keeping a lot of treats on hand, it's about controlling consequences and leading your dog to the desired behavior.
  • The strength of positive dog training seems to come from its ability to separate learning the behavior from learning the command.
