Linda Hundt, owner & chief baker at Sweetie-licious Bakery Cafe in Dewitt, Mich. has offered up the following secrets for baking a delicious Fall pie:

  • Best Michigan apples to use for pies include: Michigan Ida Red or Cortland for juiciness, tartness and stability
  • Apples add texture, sweetness in unexpected places to make everyday food absolutely delicious.
  • There are several U-Pick apple orchards in Michigan within driving distance from Chicago where you can pick fresh apples. Visit www.michigan.org/apples for more information
  • Crusts: Have all ingredients very cold, use butter for flavor and shortening for flakiness.
