DETROIT (WJBK) -- The Chevy Volt has been chosen as the vehicle to show how you can merge technologies to bring on more advancements for drivers. The vehicle is filled with apps.
"The OnStar Remote Link app where you can actually be notified when your Volt is fully charged or unlock the car doors or remote start the Volt before you want to go out to the car," said Steve Schwinke, director of Advanced Systems Development for OnStar.
They're using 4G technology, a very powerful cellular network. It's a research project with Verizon.
There are three screens in the car, all connected through the Verizon network.
"Let's say you bought a movie last night and you stored it on your home PC. Through this car, you can connect to your home PC and stream that movie right to the rear seat," Schwinke explained.
How about managing your home's energy from inside the car? There's an app for that, too.
"Where you can turn the lights off in your house because I know my son's always forgetting to turn the lights off," Schwinke said. "At a flick of a switch inside the car, the lights are off, and the next thing I can do is remember to lower the thermostat."
