Brooklyn, MI - Michigan International Speedway had some fierce competition these past two weeks. Yet, it wasn't a race.

Progressive Automotive Insurance has been holding it's X-Prize competition right here in Michigan. The X-Prize was created with one goal in mind -- build a safe, efficient car that gets at least 100 MPG in real world driving. At stake, $10 million.

But more importantly, the goal is to have a legitimate 100 mpg car emerge in the next 10 years.

"We think that if people have more choices when it comes to high mileage vehicles, it'll make their lives better," said Kathy Bell from Progressive Automotive.

The contest began with over 100 vehicles, but was widdled down to 21 by the time it reached the speedway. After a two week knockout stage, only 15 remain for the finals beginning July 19.

The competition has three main categories to divy up the money. The winner of the mainstream class will be awarded $5 million. The alternative class entries, which include side-by-side or tandem vehicles, may win $2.5 million each.

Teams came from all over the world to compete, West Philly high school, Switzerland, Colorado to take a shot at winning the competiton.

Competitors have gone through a series of rigorous tests ranging highway, urban, and city driving to safety and durability tests.

FOX 2 interns headed to MIS to see if any teams have a shot at earning the money.
