Boat Capsizes on Belleville Lake, 2 Dead

Rescue divers spend hours searching for the bodies of two men in Van Buren Township's Belleville Lake. Witnesses called 9-1-1 to report a boat capsized. Kim Michelin was first to notice something was wrong.

"Heard a call for help, and it was very faint. Sounded like it was in the distance," she said. "I told my husband, 'Go downstairs. He needs help...' and I opened the window, and I yelled downstairs... 'My husband's down. He's on his way.'"

She then picked up the phone.

"We got the 9-1-1 call about eleven o'clock this morning," said Captain Greg Laurain with Van Buren Township Public Safety.

Meanwhile, Kim's husband and a neighbor gave the screaming man a blanket and tried to help him.

"Went down to see the guy. He said there was two more people that were with him, that he (thought) they went under," said Adam Michelin. "He was exhausted. He was very cold. Everything hits you at once. You're just hoping you see somebody bobbing, (so) you can jump in and get them, but it's not the case."

Police say the boat started taking on water just before 11:00 a.m. There are two victims from Detroit. They include Fred Louis, Junior., 63, whose birthday was Tuesday, and 46-year-old William McRae. One survivor, 66-year-old Nathaniel Deck from Redford, was taken to the hospital and is said to be all right.

In 20 foot water, EMS workers say the survivor was lucky to be able to swim to shore safely.

"We recovered two life vests that were still in the package. Obviously, they did have them, but they didn't have, obviously, enough for all occupants, number one. Number two, they weren't on," Laurain said.

Laurain says this is the first accident on the lake all season.
