A woman tells police she was held as a sex slave for nearly two months, trapped in a prison of abuse and degradation. Two men are charged in the case. However, the mother of one of the suspects says the charges are simply false.
It's a small cottage on a quiet, narrow peninsula in Lake Orion. However, the police chief says it was a house of horrors, a prison where two men held a 52-year-old Orion Township woman as a sex slave.
"Just frightening and overwhelming and... on so many levels disturbing. You wouldn't expect that in a tiny little community like Lake Orion where you live in this beautiful community," said neighbor Kim Lukas. "To have that so close is kind of frightening."
47-year-old Frank Bennett, whose family owns the property, and 54-year-old Leon Setty are both charged with multiple counts of criminal sexual conduct.
The woman told police she became a live in caretaker at the home in September, but then, she alleges, the men began beating her, sexually assaulting her and threatening to harm her and her 13-year-old daughter if she attempted to escape.
Bennett's mother, who lives next door, disputes the woman's claims.
"She said to me that my son was helping her because her husband had beaten her, and then she turns around and says... something different. So, I can't believe anything she might have said," Elizabeth Bennett said.
Bennett worked in the area fixing boat docks.
"We walk past here, bike by here all the time, and he's always been very friendly. He's had a little dog out there, and he's got a child. So, he's always very nice," Lukas said.
Whatever was happening in the home ended the night of November seventh.
A friend of Bennett's happened to stop by at the home. He told police Bennett and Setty offered the woman to perform sex acts on him. He refused. Later that night, he took the women from the home and brought her to police.
Bennett's mother proclaims her son's innocence. "You think your son is not capable of this," said FOX 2's Bill Gallagher. "No, I do not. In fact, people that are hurting or anything... it's like a safe house for people," said Elizabeth Bennett.
A preliminary examination for the accused is set for next Tuesday.
