DETROIT - The Problem Solvers help a Detroit family say a proper good-bye. Their loved one was the security guard killed at the Holocaust Museum, but they could not afford to attend his funeral.
Yvonne Johns was devastated the last time she spoke with FOX 2. "I (cried and) broke down on my mother's bed, and cried," she said. Her cousin, 39-year-old Stephen Tyrone Johns, died after being shot at the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. Johns was the heroic security guard who saved countless lives that day.
"It is my nephew and I want to be there for the family," said Martie Johns, the victim's aunt.
Some relatives in Detroit say they were not able to see Stephen Johns very much since his wedding a year and a half ago. They told FOX 2 they did not have a way to make the trip to Washington, D.C. for a funeral on Friday. They wanted to be there to support John's wife and three boys, but they did not have the money or reliable transportation.
After our story aired came the phone call. It was Congressman John Conyers, calling to say he arranged for nine airline tickets and hotel rooms for the family.
Overwhelmed with emotions, Yvonne and her mother say this tragedy has also helped them to see the goodness in people. We asked her how she feels to know she can now attend the funeral. She responded, "Happy, I'm happy I'll be there with my family."
