Two teenage wrestlers from metropolitan Detroit are heroes. They saved the life of a six-year-old boy during an out-of-town trip.
John Yank of New Baltimore and Nick Rosario of Roseville, both 14, are courageous and brave. Because of them a little boy was given a second chance at life.
On August second, Team Michigan wrestlers journeyed to Iowa to compete in the Junior Olympics. However, what happened on their first night at the hotel is something they will never forget.
"Me, John and a couple other guys were sitting in the Jacuzzi and they left and I said, 'John, you want to go swimming?" And we went over to the pool," said Rosario.
"I seen the little boy at the bottom of the pool. I didn't know if he was like just swimming, but then I realized he wasn't moving," said Yank.
"I was thinking we got to get him out of there," Rosario said. "You got to just act quick."
"I jumped in and grabbed him and pulled him out," Yank said.
"I said I'll go get some help," said Rosario.
"His face... really scared me because... he was blue and I thought he was like already gone," said Yank.
That six-year-old boy nearly drowned. Rosario and Yank got there just in the nick of time.
"I couldn't just sit there and let this kid die," Rosario said.
"They did everything possible to give this boy a chance at life," said wrestling coach John Burke.
Some much needed help came from a Boy Scout, who also knew exactly what to do.
"Sprang into action. He liked rushed into there and started CPR right away," Yank said.
However, all the while, they were worried and scared. "Who knows how long he had no oxygen to his brain," said Yank.
He was at the pool all alone. "His parents weren't watching him," Yank said.
There is no way you can imagine what these boys went through seeing something like that, but one things for sure, their actions were nothing short of heroic.
"It was basically just kind of instinct for me," Rosario said.
"Both young men are incredible people, and if I had to pick two kids that would've responded to an event like this, it would've been those two," Burke said.
"I don't really consider myself a video. I was just at the right place at the right time, I guess," said Rosario.
They saved a little boys life that day and they also helped their team take first place. Just another example of how these two hometown heroes are selfless.
"All the qualities that you look for in a young man," said Burke. "I've never been prouder."
The little victim is currently in critical condition. Investigators are trying to figure out if they will file charges because the family members of the six-year-old were not watching him. Meanwhile, folks in Iowa are grateful that our boys from Michigan were there to help.
