90-Year-Old Stock Certificate Returned to Original Owner

Emotional reunion took place Saturday

DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) - Paperwork that's 90 years old -- stock from Shepherd Co-Operative out of Shepherd, Michigan. A $10 stock certificate from 1922 for the agricultural company was found in a garage in Detroit.

The Sims family found it, and Saturday, Fox 2 cameras were there as it was returned to the rightful owner.

"I just want to make sure the people who it belongs to it goes to," said Miranda Sims.

The company is now closed, so the certificate is likely not worth much, but it's not just the certificate itself. There's a letter from Joseph Dereadt from 1976. He asks how much the then 55-year-old stock is worth. His mom, who lived in Warren, was likely involved with the transaction. An envelop with her name was found in the same garage.

"May have some significance to the family members. It obviously didn't get there. May bring back memories. It could be sentimental. It could mean a lot for that family," Sims said.

We worked through the day to find the right family and guess what? The FOX 2 Problem Solvers got to the bottom of it and found the son of the man who had that stock -- Donald Dereadt, who is now 69 years old.

He met the Sims and got the paperwork and a necklace that says "please return if found." Dereadt told us he only has one or two handwritten notes left from his dad, who died in 1978 and he's thankful to have the items back.
