A community-wide effort to crackdown on an increasing amount of crime in Detroit will be focusing on the neighborhoods between 6 Mile and 8 Mile, and Van Dyke and Gratiot.

Last month alone, a whopping 544 crimes were committed in this area.

"Purse snatchings, assaults, murders - of course," listed local resident Phillip Gardner.

Gardner was jumped last month, and forced to move to an area that he still feels is plagued with crime.

But, the Wayne County Sheriff's Department does not want this to be the norm.

To help cut down on the crime Sheriff Benny Napoleon has created the Sheriff's Community Organized Urban Team - or SCOUT - plan.

Deputies will now be embedded daily with a proactive community group that is already patrolling the area regularly.

Bishop Anthony Russle is the leader of MAN - maintaining a neighborhood - made up of more than 50 volunteers who drive around, keeping an eye on crime.

Residents in the area seemed to agree that increased visibility of law enforcement would cut down on criminal activity.
