DETROIT - Friday, Mayor Dave Bing addressed some of the many police officers and firefighters who will be protecting the city this holiday weekend. The three day period known as "Angel's Night" is underway.
"Historically, it's been a dangerous night. You got a few people that act up and don't do what they're supposed to do, and it's created a situation where we have to do what we're doing," said Bing.
What they're doing is mobilizing an army of angels. 20,000 volunteers have signed up so far to patrol the streets and prevent fires. More volunteers are expected to show up at the community access centers, and many more will be participating in "Watch Your Block" by simply turning on their porch lights and keeping an eye on the street.
In our second video report, FOX 2's Taryn Asher introduces you to some of the angels working to keep their neighborhoods safe this Halloween.
"I am very thankful for our volunteers because without them we could not mobilize the human resources that we need to watch (and) protect the city," Bing said.
There's also a curfew in effect for people 18 and under from 6:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, kids 15 and younger must be in by 10:00 p.m. 16 and 17-year-olds must be in by 11:00 p.m.
"Hopefully parents and adults will be involved to make sure that the kids respect the curfew. We're not interested in locking people up. We just want to make sure people stay safe and do the things that they're supposed to do," said Bing.
