myFOXDetroit.com - Education day at the North American International Auto Show isn't just a day for kids to get out of the classroom and drool over some hot cars. It's also a great way for children to learn about the auto industry, the backbone of our community at a very early age.
5-thousand local school children took a break from the books, but that doesn't mean they weren't learning. Bud Muylaert a local engineering teacher says, "It gives them an insight into what's out there for them, what different kinds of jobs. I mean it's not just about building the cars, there's also all different kinds of systems that are involved in this."
Kids ranging from pre-K to 12th grade got a chance to take in the sights and sounds of the North American International Auto Show. Many telling Fox 2's Amy Andrews they were excited to be there and to see all of the cars that they have.
Many of the kids are a decade away from getting their driver's license, but that doesn't mean they don't know exactly what they would drive if they could. Several students saying they would drive Chrysler cars, the Camaro, Dodge avenger, and the Chrysler 200. One student even said she wanted a Durango, with a television inside.
Half of the children Fox 2 spoke with have a family member working in the auto industry so this was their chance to scope out their handy work.
The public days for the 2012 North American International Auto Show at Cobo Center in downtown Detroit continue until 7 p.m. Sunday January 22. Tickets are $12 for adults, $6 for seniors and children.
