Bashara Murder Case: Deal in the Works?

GROSSE POINTE PARK, Mich. (WJBK) -- It's been exactly two weeks since Jane Bashara was reported missing from her Grosse Pointe Park home. So far, there have been no arrests in the case, but Bob Bashara's attorney believes a deal is in the works that could mean charges against his client.

"If the prosecutor's office follows the law and follows the evidence, I don't believe my client will be charged, but if the prosecutor's office makes a deal with Joe, then they've got no choice," said attorney David Griem.

He is not expecting good news for his client, Bob Bashara. Criminal defense attorney Susan Reed has been appointed to represent Bashara's handyman, Joe Gentz -- the guy who allegedly told police Bashara paid him to kill his wife, Jane.

"I think as we sit here right now, Joe's attorney is seated with the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office discussing a resolution of Joe's case where Joe will be treated leniently in return for his testimony against my client, Bob Bashara," Griem told FOX 2's Amy Lange.

Gentz was released from police custody on Friday after coming into the Grosse Pointe Park Police Department last Tuesday to reportedly tell investigators he strangled Jane Bashara in her garage. However, no one has been charged in the case, though all along Bob Bashara has been a person of interest.

Details of Bob Bashara's personal life have captured national attention, including salacious allegations regarding a sex dungeon at one of his properties and his S&M lifestyle outside of his marriage, such as an old profile on a bondage website where "MasterBob1000" advertises "I'm a true Master... come to me." Then there's allegations of numerous women and a girlfriend and sex slave named Rachel. A photograph shows the two of them dancing at her daugther's recent wedding in South Carolina.

"It's my understanding that Bob and Rachel had an open relationship as did Bob and Jane, and I think today that's not as unusual as it might have been some years ago," Griem said.

Bashara has publicly denied having a girlfriend, calling Rachel a friend, and he's refused to discuss his alleged involvement in S&M. His attorney worries all the talk of kinky sex outside his marriage is tainting the potential jury pool if his client is charged.

"What concerns me greatly is that there's a segment of our population that, if you're a sinner, and I'm talking about morally, not criminally, if you're a sinner, that makes you a criminal, too, and that scares the hell out of me," Griem said.

Again, it's not clear if prosecutors are cutting a deal with Joe Gentz at this time. That is certainly the speculation of David Griem. However, the prosecutor is not talking, although Griem told us he did have a brief conversation on Monday with Kym Worthy. He did not detail what was discussed.
