BIRMINGHAM, Mich. - Birmingham-based Belfor U.S.A. is the world's largest disaster restoration company. The company is launching its second mobile command center as the hurricane season is in full furry along the East Coast.
"One is already on the East Coast, and this one will be heading out soon to probably the Cape Cod, Nantucket and/or Hallifax area," said Belfor CEO Sheldon Yellen. "This unit is used for mobile offices. As you know, when you show up to a catastrophe situation, there's no power, there's no water, and we have to come prepared to work."
The moving office moves disaster restorations.
"This will house 32 computer sets, 32 cell phone with satellite hook-ups. We also have the ability to hold conferences... and so our people can hit the ground working and start the restoration and reconstruction process as soon as possible," Yellen said.
Belfor's reach is worldwide, and the command center helps coordinate communications with the headquarters in Birmingham.
"This is also direct satellite back to our office... in Birmingham, so... in Birmingham we can control any disaster site around the country and know what's going on at all times with our people," said Yellen.
The command center has a healthy price tag.
"Approximately a million dollars worth of equipment," Yellen said.
The command center will remain along the East Coast through the hurricane season unless another disaster hits elsewhere.
