We've heard very little lately from police and prosecutors in the Jane Bashara murder case, but make no mistake, they've been hard at work. Are parts of Joe Gentz's story starting to make sense?
Joseph Gentz, the handyman, had reportedly told police several different stories about strangling Jane Bashara in her garage and that Bob Bashara agreed to give him $8,000 and a used Cadillac to do it.
Bashara does have an old Cadillac last registered in 2008 parked at an old property of his in Saint Clair Shores, but David Griem, his attorney, said that proves nothing.
"It's my understanding that Joe Gentz saw that Cadillac for sale some time ago and inquired about purchasing that car, but didn't have the funds to do so," he explained.
Griem said he's conducting his own investigation using a retired FBI agent and his associate. He said they've developed some theories and persons of interest in the murder of Jane Bashara, and it's not Joe Gentz.
"Only because of what the police did in releasing Joe Gentz. We just can't comprehend that they could have released him thinking that he was the murderer," Griem told us.
Meantime, authorities continue their investigation, over the weekend interviewing a woman from Oregon who was allegedly getting involved in a relationship with Bob Bashara and his girlfriend, Rachel.
"So what. What is that evidence of?" Griem remarked.
Griem said again it proves nothing, but blog posts from Rachel on ALT.com indicate Master Bob and Rachel were looking for another slave to join their family and even planning for the three of them to move in together.
We asked Griem whether Bashara was in a relationship with Rachel and seeking someone else to have a relationship with as well.
"I don't know what people do on the internet," he responded.
Griem said he won't comment on anything that could hurt the Bashara children, but he rejects the speculation that Bob had Jane killed so he could be involved in an alternative lifestyle.
"I don't think the issues that have developed from those internet conversations have anything to do whatsoever with this case," he told us.
