CASCO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) - An 11-year-old boy has died from injuries suffered in a car crash along the Macomb-St. Clair County border.
Family members tell FOX 2 Kyle Halcomb died over the weekend. He was one of five children injured when the van they were traveling in was struck at the intersection of 26 Mile and County Line Road Friday morning.
Police said they just missed their bus and their mom was driving them to school when they crossed the intersection and two cars hit the van. One was going east and the other west.
"It was roughly 7:25. I was walking out the door and I heard bang, bang. I [looked] over and the brown van that was involved was just rolling and flipping," said witness Dave Shirkey, who called 911.
Police say the four other children, ages 8 to 13, are all in stable condition. Kyle was sitting behind his mom where the van took the brunt of the impact. He attended Anchor Bay Middle School North along with the 12 and 13-year-old.
Meantime, several witnesses are raising questions about the traffic signals and whether they were working properly.
"The light was messed up," Shirkey explained. "Right after the accident, it was definitely blinking red on all sides, and then the light kept changing green on each corner."
Several hours after the accident, we saw workers with the Macomb County Road Commission checking out the signal controls inside of an electrical box. As soon as we pulled up, they quickly drove away. They later told us their records show the signals were working properly before the crash.
Other neighbors told FOX 2 accidents happen often there and problems with the lights are common.
Police are investigating. The step-mother and the other two drivers were not seriously hurt.
Fox 2 is looking for some good ideas on how to redefine Detroit. Have one?
