SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -- The Coast Guard Investigative Service is asking for help locating the person responsible for sending a series of false distress calls. They started in 2010 over marine band radio.
It's believed the calls came from Bolles Harbor area south of Monroe. During each call, the suspect claims to be in distress in or over Lake Erie.

"To date, we've received 58 distress calls costing the taxpayers over $1 million," said U.S. Coast Guard Captain Jeff Ogden. "Every false alarm or 'hoax call', as we call them, has the potential of taking rescue resources away from citizens in the Detroit and Windsor region that may actually need our help."
False distress calls are a felony.
Call 1-800-SPEAK-UP. Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in this case. If the tip is received by midnight Friday, the reward will increase to $2,000.
