NORTHVILLE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -- There are no sidewalks and no streetlights at the intersection of Seven Mile and Gerald Avenue in Northville where police say three employees of New Wing Hing were walking home from work. It was a trek they made every day from the Highland Lakes shopping center.
"They crossed the road. The first two went across and a third, our victim, came behind them, and the vehicle struck her in the middle of the roadway," said John Werth with Northville Township Public Safety.
Witnesses said it happened in an instant in an area where there have been two other deadly pedestrian accidents in recent months. This time a 60-year-old woman, who worked as a cook at the restaurant, was hit and killed.
Police said it appears from their investigation so far that the driver, a 24-year-old woman from Redford, simply didn't have time to stop. They said she wasn't speeding and there was no alcohol involved.
With repeated accidents in the area, police are working with the Department of Public Services to look at possible improvements, including adding more lighting to make that stretch of Seven Mile safer.
"This was just an unfortunate accident where they crossed in the middle of the roadway. Anytime a pedestrian is in the road, it should be at an intersection where there [are] lights," Wreth explained.
