DEARBORN, Mich. (WJBK) -- If you ask Goodwill, a downtown Dearborn shopping center is the perfect location for one its upscale retail stores.
"They're looking for those deals and our Goodwill store does that," said Mark Lane with Goodwill Industries.
A Dearborn city ordinance lumps second hand stores with strip clubs and says they cannot be within 700 feet of schools and homes. Considering the ordinance is about 20 years old, Goodwill execs thought getting a special waiver would be a breeze.
Most of the people who live nearby, business owners and even Father Petroske, the head of Sacred Heart Church and School located directly across the street, say this upscale retail is great for the community.
However, there are some in Dearborn who aren't so convinced, and some of them sit on the city's planning commission. A vote Monday night ended in a 4-4 stalemate.
