Detroit Police kicked off Operation Inside Out: Night Angels on Thursday. The plan? To move sworn, administrative personnel out of the precinct and into the streets.
The area of Seven Mile and Gratiot has been deemed as a hot zone, which means there are higher crime rates in that east side neighborhood.
"We're focusing on hot spots, so right now this is a hot spot and we're putting forth an effort to put officers on the street there," said Kirk Lewis, Mayor Dave Bing's chief of staff.
We rode along with an officer and a sergeant. They cruised, then parked for 30 minutes. They spoke with people such as Shiquoise Stokes. She is raising eight children ages two through 16. The police visiting her doorstep came as a surprise.
Units were also making traffic stops. If someone has a warrant, they will be arrested.
Police said they will be doing this every night, but no one will know where. They explained that it's data driven. If an area shows a need for increased patrols, that's where the officers will be sent.
We sampled opinions. People on the street applauded the decision.
"Maybe it will keep people driving slower, maybe keep their guns in their pockets," one woman told us.
