DETROIT (WJBK) - Detroit Police say a gunman walked into McDonald's on Livernois at Six Mile just before 3:00 p.m. Friday and announced a holdup.
Customers were inside and witnesses say the gunman jumped over the counter. One of the customers inside was a retired Detroit Police officer, who also had a gun.
The retired officer confronted the gunman. There was a shootout inside the McDonald's. Several shots were fired. The gunman was killed by the retired officer.
That retired cop was not hit, and no customers or employees were injured.
Jasmine Wallace said the dead teen was her brother -- 16-year-old Robert Coffey of Detroit.
"My brother is dead in the McDonald's," she told FOX 2's Ron Savage.
Detroit Police say they believe the gunman was acting alone, but they're still investigating to see if someone could have been assisting him.
All employees and customers were interviewed, although a few customers did run away during the gun fight.
Police will not identify the retired officer.
The uncle of the deceased teen said the family is stunned.
"He was a good kid. I see him everyday," said Larry Brooks. "I've never known him to carry a gun or none of that. I know of no criminal activity that he's been involved in."
New glass was installed. A window had been shot out in the gun battle. The dinning area did not reopen Friday night. The drive-through was operating.
