ROBIN SCHWARTZ
DETROIT - A woman was stabbed near Henry Ford High School on Thursday. Now, a suspect has been charged.
FOX 2 cameras captured a gruesome scene Thursday near Henry Ford High School on Detroit's northwest side. A 24-year-old victim named Laurie laid stabbed and bleeding in the street. She underwent surgery, and a friend of the victim was able to talk to her at the hospital.
"She told me that they were in the woods and that the guy... just came out of nowhere on her and the other young lady," said Denai Croff. "He attacked her first, cut her throat and tried to sexually assault her."
However, Laurie fought off her attacker and was able to call 911 from her cell phone. She told officers a second victim had been dumped in a garbage can. They searched the area and found an address amongst some trash.
"Once we got to the address, we encountered the suspect, who appeared to be bloodied to the officers, and so he was immediately taken into custody," said Detroit Police Deputy Chief James Tolbert.
26-year-old Andra Gaines is now behind bars. The second victim was being held against her will at his house. She says she was sexually assaulted.
Polices say Gaines has a criminal history that involves larceny and drug arrests. He was just arraigned late this afternoon and charged with attempted murder.
"He was in and out of the woods all day... constantly in the woods all day, early morning. You know, just a real creepy guy," Croff said.
That is how neighbors describe the suspect to Croff, who runs a halfway house and shelter where both victims lived. Right now, they are telling police they did not know their attacker, but investigators are still working to verify that.
We are told Laurie's injures are not life threatening. She is expected to recover.
