Detroiter Helping Teenage Girls See Their Potential

DETROIT (WJBK) - A city's future depends on its young people. One Detroiter is giving teenage girls a place to vent and realize their potential.

Growing up in Detroit isn't always easy. To deal with the problems, you have to be willing to face them.

"They're upset. They're angry, and they don't have anyone to talk to," said Mary Sheffield.

That's exactly why she started First Steps Mentoring, a program for high school girls that are on the edge and often have nowhere to turn.

Just talking about the challenges can be the inspiration they need to take control of their lives and their futures.

"They've been through so much you wouldn't believe it, but they still get up every day and fight, come to school," Sheffield said.

Thanks to role models all over Detroit, these young Detroiters are getting a glimpse of the future they can create for themselves and their city.

"Being able to have somebody that I can tell and be there for me made me feel like I can do anything. Anything's possible at this point," one girl told us.
