NORTHWEST DETROIT (WJBK) - "At 6:19... like clockwork, she leaves everyday," Deena Anderson said Monday.
She was talking about the time in the morning her daughters, 13 year-old Toryana and her 8 year-old sister, leave each morning to walk hand-in-hand to the bus stop.
But last Friday, something went terribly wrong. Toryana was helping her little sister cross the street at McNichols and Telegraph, when they say a truck came out of nowhere.
"She said, 'Mom, I was walking across the street, I looked to check the light. It was red, so I crossed," Anderson said. "Then she said, 'Next thing I know, someone's picking me up off the street."
But before Toryana was hit by the truck, she jumped into action and pushed her little sister out of harm's way.
Witnesses dialed 911 carried the girls to safety. They say the driver of the black truck that hit Toryana kept on going, but he didn't get far before he was stopped by people who tried to get information.
Unfortunately, police have not been unable to locate the driver yet.
Toryana was rushed to Children's Hopsital with severe injuries to the right side of her body.
Her mother tells Fox 2 that she will undergo brain surgery Tuesday.
"I told her she was a hero, and she said, 'Mom, I just did what I was supposed to do," Anderson said.
