SOUTHGATE, Mich. (WJBK) - A Southgate Elementary school was closed Monday as workers cleaned the building following a reported flu outbreak.
FOX 2's Al Allen reports that around 180 students at Allen Elementary were called in sick on Friday, over half of the school's enrollment.
"Seems to be a 12 to 36-hour virus," said Southgate Community Schools Superintendent Nancy Nagle. "We've never had that big of an outbreak." Nagle went to say that many parents held their students out on Friday as a precautionary measure as well.
Some parents questioned whether the proper steps were taken over the weekend to clean the building. "We've had people coming up here, staking out the school since pretty much Friday just to make sure what was supposed to be done was being done," said Stacy Vargas, a parent in the district. "We have proof that shows that they did not."
Nagle reassured parents, however, that workers were in the building over the weekend and the cleaning process continued on Monday.
She fully expects classes to resume on Tuesday.
