DETROIT (WJBK) - Three weeks after FOX 2 first broke the story, Congressman John Conyers (D-Mich.) is finally answering questions about his son driving his government issued vehicle.
In November, John Conyers III reported $29,000 worth of items stolen from the Cadillac Escalade he was driving that is registered to the 14th Congressional District his father represents. According to a police report , two Apple MacBooks, valued at $1,100 apiece, and more than $27,000 worth of concert tickets to the Fillmore were stolen.
U.S. General Services Administration lists unauthorized use of a government vehicle as a potential firing offense for a government employee.
On Wednesday, Conyer's office sent a statement saying in part that he has reimbursed the U.S. Treasury in the amount of $5,682.
"This amount is based on the per diem cost of the vehicle to the taxpayers for every day my son could conceivably have had access to the vehicle," said Conyers.
"It is unlikely that his usage was anywhere near this high, but I want to be sure that there is no cost to the taxpayers whatsoever."
Conyers also says the laptops stolen did not belong to the government or have any sensitive information on them.
Conyers has been a member of the U.S. House since 1965.
His wife, Monica, is serving a 37-month federal prison sentence for corruption after pleading guilty last year to a bribery scheme involving her vote on the Detroit City Council in favor of a sludge-hauling contract.
