It's national Dump the Pump Day, and Detroiters are getting involved.
The movement is designed to inform people of different alternatives to driving yourself to get around town. It's better for the environment and easier on the wallet.
People are encouraged to take public transportation, such as van share, car pooling, the People Mover and DDOT and SMART buses.
"They save money on gasoline by using public transportation. It's generally a lot less expensive. I, myself, take the SMART bus to work from the Farmington Hills Park and Ride over at the OCC campus, and I save an average of six dollars a day with a cost of about two dollars to ride the bus," said Detroit People Mover Marketing Manager Dennis R. Green.
It's estimated drivers can save thousands of dollars every year if they cut back on driving.
