DETROIT, Mich. - Basketball Legend and accomplished author, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar appeared at Orchestra Hall in Detroit on Tuesday to deliver a speech and reflect the work of Dr. King for Wayne State University's Martin Luther King Jr. Tribute Luncheon.
Abdul-Jabbar was a 19-time all-star and the NBA's all-time leading scorer. However, Kareem himself says, "I can do more than shoot a ball through a hoop." His lifelong passion for history led to his authoring six best-selling books on various historical subjects.
It was a meeting with Dr. King in 1964 that made an impression on Abdul-Jabbar's life as a mentor, which gave him the incentive to reach out and do more. He created the non-profit Skyhook Foundation, which mentors aspiring youth.
