(WJBK) - An Eastern Michigan University organization promoting second chances is expected to welcome former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick on campus Tuesday night.
The Student group B.L.A.C.K., which stands for Black Leaders Aspiring for Critical Knowledge, says Kilpatrick is scheduled to speak at the Student Center Grand Ballroom at 7 p.m.
A spokesperson for the group says Kilpatrick is expected to speak redemption and second chances.
“We believe that with bringing Kwame, it’s showing people that if you’ve made mistakes in that past, you can take steps to correcting them,” B.L.A.C.K. rep Benoris Carter told The Eastern Echo.
Kilpatrick resigned as mayor in 2008 after pleading guilty to obstruction of justice in state court. He served time in a county jail but later spent 14 months in state prison for violating his probation in the earlier case. He was paroled Aug. 2, but faces a federal corruption trial in 2012 on fraud, tax and racketeering conspiracy charges.
