(WJBK) - Drivers in Detroit could soon see cheaper auto insurance.
State Sen. Virgil Smith, D-Detroit is expected to introduce legislation this week that would allow drivers to purchase policies without the state's expensive unlimited personal injury coverage.
FOX 2's Monica Gayle talked with Smith about his plan. Click on the video player to watch their conversation.
As of now, Michigan has one of the highest uninsured driver's rates in the country.
The Detroit Free Press reports the policies would be available to good drivers with income no greater than three times the federal poverty guidelines and cars worth less than $20,000.
Detroit would be a test market. If the plan worked, the cheaper insurance policies could be extended to other areas.
