GROSSE POINTE PARK, Mich. (WJBK) -- It's now been two weeks since Jane Bashara was found murdered in her Mercedes. The SUV was left on Annott in Detroit. Police may be getting closer to bringing charges. They removed potential evidence from the Bashara family home on Wednesday.
We've also discovered a new connection to the man who allegedly confessed to the crime.
Joe Gentz tried to avoid cameras after a quick stop at the Grosse Pointe Park Police Department where he spent nearly 80 hours last week reportedly confessing his roll in the Jane Bashara murder.
Gentz left in a hurry driven away in a van registered to Steven Dennis Vergona. FOX 2 has learned Gentz's go-to man, who carts him back and forth to the police department, court and even Gentz's landlord, also has another bizarre connection to this case that may be more than a coincidence.
FOX 2 has learned Steve Vergona owns a now abandoned Detroit house on Annott Street.
"He lived here, and he used to come by and check on his property," said a former neighbor. "My boys used to do lawn work for him."
This property and others at one time belonging to Vergona are about one block south from where Jane Bashara's body was found strangled in her Mercedes SUV on Annott near Pinewood.
Was this a coincidence? Was this why Jane Bashara's body was dumped there, an area Gentz was familiar with because of his friend? Or did he have help?
The man at the center of the investigation, Bob Bashara, stayed quiet as he walked to his attorney's office to discuss his case that has taken many twists and turns over the last two weeks.
His handyman, Gentz, allegedly told police Bashara paid him to kill his wife. Bashara's attorney has revealed Bashara had an open marriage, confirming his relationship with a woman named Rachel, and with her we've learned of an alleged secret life involving S&M and a sex dungeon.
Bashara is still considered a person of interest, and while he met with his attorney, a second search warrant was executed at his home. Grosse Pointe Park Police detectives and Michigan State Police scoured the home, we're told looking for a paper trail. Evidence technicians were seen carrying out a red container and a milk crate full of manila envelopes.
"They don't have any evidence. No, I don't think it's a prelude. It's a prelude to trying to find some evidence, but let's keep in mind they conducted a search of everything a week and a half ago. I believe they found nothing. I believe they are going to find nothing today because there is no evidence. I think it's a prelude to a dismissal of the case," said David Griem, who represents Bob Bashara.
Sources told FOX 2 that blood was found in the garage of the Bashara home on Wednesday. It is going to be tested to find out if it was indeed Jane Bashara's or not, but because of how she died, it's not clear if it would be.
Fox 2 is looking for some good ideas on how to redefine Detroit. Have one?
