11-year old Mikhail Boone is a student at Chandler Park Academy Middle School in Harper Woods.
Mikhail and his brother, Michael, are always picked up after school by their mother, but there was a mix-up Thursday afternoon.
"I didn't see my mom's car, so I was walking home. I made a wrong turn and I kept walking," Mikhail told FOX 2's Bill Gallagher.
Brenda Boone, Mikhail's mother, waited in the parking lot with his brother until she realized he wasn't there.
"(I was) thinking that he came directly home. But when we got here, still no Mikhail," Brenda Boone told Gallagher.
Mikhail has walked home from school before without any problem, but he does have an attention deficit and his mother believes he made a wrong turn and simply got confused.
Brenda Boone started to worry, so she called police.
"Horrifying. Because, at first when it was daylight outside, it was like, well - he'll turn up. He'll come home," Brenda Boone said. "But when it started getting dark, I mean, he's not one to run the streets. He doesn't know the streets."
Mikhail arrived at a Clinton Township gas station around 1 a.m. - more than eight miles from his school.
"I went inside and asked the man how far is it from Detroit," Mikhail said. "He said it's too far for me to walk. I asked him (if I) could call my mom, and he said 'I don't have a phone for you.'"
So, he went and sat outside.
Alan Dozier was pumping gas and spotted him.
"He said he had to use a phone, and no one would let him use a phone," Dozier told Gallagher. "So I said you have an angel tonight and we're gonna make sure you're safe. That you get home ok."
Ashraf Ali, the station manager, said it may have been a customer who refused to let Mikhail use a phone.
Both Brenda and Mikhail were very appreciative of Dozier's assistance.
"I'm really grateful that he did it for me," Mikhail said.
