DETROIT - Even someplace as sacred as a church is not immune from violence. Shots were fired outside a funeral Friday while mourners paid respects to a murder victim.
A funeral service had just begun at the Puritan Avenue Baptist Church. It was for Dwayne Eugene Smith, Junior. He was shot to death five days ago.
"We (were) having a service. A bunch of young people (got) together, and all of a sudden... everybody (said) somebody was out there shooting. Everybody took off running. Service started all over again," said Phyllis Henderson.
Then there was more chaos.
"Somebody (said) somebody... got shot and everybody just (started) running. I knew my brother was (outside), so I ran to go see where my brother was (at). By then, they (were) knocking my mother down. I had to grab her. Then, when I got outside, the guy was shot. Blood (was) all over his arm. I got blood on my foot," Henderson said.
One man was shot, and his condition is not yet known.
"He stood in the back of the church with me all through the service, and then, all of a sudden... he went outside for something because they (were) out there arguing," said Henderson.
Police are trying to determine how many shots were actually fired and how many were involved in the shooting.
The murder and shooting may be connected and gang related.
"I do believe by being a bunch of young people it was gang related," Henderson said.
"That's sad when you can't have a funeral for your relatives or your family without somebody coming in trying to shoot up the whole funeral home," she added.
