In Oxford, operations are temporarily shut down at a trucking company where a 52-year-old man was hit and killed by a gravel hauler Wednesday morning.
The long-time trucker was just starting his day when the accident happened. His family says he had a disability that may have contributed to this tragedy.
52-year-old Jerry Setter drove a big rig with a big heart. The long time trucker was walking to his truck at around 5:00 a.m. when he was hit and killed by a co-worker moving a gravel hauler in the parking lot of TKMS Trucking in Oxford.
"Sounds like they need to take more precautionary measures, that's for darn sure," said Rory Zeeman with the Sons of the American Legion.
Family members say Jerry was deaf in one ear and may not have heard the truck coming in his direction. They say the yard lights had not yet been turned on, and they're not sure whether the gravel hauler was using its headlights.
A flag on the complex was lowered to half staff and drivers were sent home. Some are meeting with grief consolers.
We talked to a spokesperson for the company by phone. He said they have been in their present location since 1979, and they've never had an similar incident. He also said the drivers are all like family and they're taking this hard.
"I'm going to miss him dearly," Zeeman said. "All around, he was just a great man."
Zeeman worked alongside Jerry, who was the commander of the Sons of the American Legion. He cooked breakfast at their monthly meetings and was known for his patriotism, sense of humor and generous spirit.
"He does a ton of volunteer work around here and our community," said Zeeman. "He also did karaoke every Saturday here at the post. Great singer. Just loved by all, and it's going to be a big loss."
Setter leaves behind four children and one grandchild. He worked for TKMS for about six months.
Police are investigating, and the family hopes to learn more about how the tragic accident happened.
