LIVONIA, Mich. (WJBK) - Part of a carnival ride came crashing down hitting a 36-year-old woman in the head. The mother attending the Livonia Spree with her children was taken away by ambulance. The ride remains shut down.
It happened Tuesday night at the popular summer festival at Farmington Road south of Five Mile.
Mayor Jack Kirksey said the ride, "The Fighter," had passed state inspection.
"We hope that she heals quickly and that there's not any permanent harm to her, but we regret so much the pain that she's in and that this happened," he told FOX 2.
It is said her injuries are not life threatening, but the incident has some at the Livonia Spree a little unsure about safety.
"It worries me … the quality of work that they put in," said Stephen Huber. "Are the rides safe?"
"I know some people that are going to come here today, but not ride any rides," said Ian McCracken.
Several rides were being worked on Wednesday, including "The Fighter". It's believed metal fatigue in the bolts themselves may be to blame. Now, all the bolts are being replaced.
State inspectors have already been out looking at not just "The Fighter," but all the rides at the Spree.
"I would assume that since there was an accident that they would be much more careful, go over the rides and make sure everything is very, very safe for everyone, for adults and especially the children," said Jennifer Adkins.
Especially the children who so look forward to this every summer.
"The Spree is just going to be a lot of fun for everyone. Snacks, rides, games, prizes," said Andrew Esser.
