MILFORD, Mich. (WJBK) - About 20 kids boarded a bus Tuesday afternoon after school let out at Oak Valley Middle School. Everything was fine until the bus starting making some really strange moves at East Commerce Road near Duck Lake in Milford Township.
"I'm on my way home listening to my iPod and, all of a sudden, I feel us kind of like drifting to the side, and we just kind of like tipped over and I fell on top of one kid," said Rielly Butcher. "He kind of actually saved me because he grabbed my fleece and ... helped me from not actually flipping over all the way, but I still hit my hip on the window."
"Everything's fine. I just bruised it a little."
Milford Police have not said why this happened. Nonetheless, the bus rolled down a ditch and finally came to a stop on its side.
"I was just freaking out," Rielly Butcher told us. "Everybody was screaming and really worried that we were not going to be okay."
"We ran up there and I just see this huge bus tipped over in somebody's front lawn. It was pretty scary when I got there," said Shannon Butcher, Rielly's mom.
How did the students get out of the bus?
"We were trying to open the back door and it kind of got stuck, so somebody ... kicked it open," Rielly Butcher said. "The windows ... at the top of the bus, we kicked those open, too, and people crawled out of those and the back door."
"I can't believe no one was seriously injured," Shannon Butcher remarked.
"One girl, actually, we think that she broke her collarbone, and one kid had a lot of bruises on his face and a lot of scratches on his face," said Rielly Butcher.
"Could've been a lot worse," Shannon Butcher said.
Police tell us everyone will be okay. The bus driver was issued a citation for failure to use due care and caution.
