LIVONIA, Mich. (myFOXDetroit.com) - 'Tis the season for shopping. The countdown is on to Christmas, and that means some very busy malls and department stores this weekend. We spoke to some shoppers about the last minute rush.

It is exactly one week before Christmas, and many people aren't done with their holiday shopping. That means the rush is on to find those last minute deals and hard to find toys.

"I've been here since this morning waiting to get one, and she finally got one. Merry Christmas," said Carina Cushingberry.

For Carina, waiting until the last minute to finish her Christmas shopping proved prosperous. Her seven-year-old got the hottest toy of the season thanks to a new shipment at Toys "R" Us.

"She only asked for two things, a Baby Alive and a Zhu Zhu pet. Got the Baby Alive, and now I got the Zhu Zhu pet. So, I'm one over on Santa right now," Cushingberry said.

Carina, like many shoppers during these economically challenging times, are relying on layaway and using cash this holiday season. Credit cards are a no-no.

"I'm definitely trying to stick to cash because after the holidays, you do not want to get a bill like, 'What did I do.' So, I'm trying to just buy thing with what I have at the time," said Michelle Pittman.

"I always get myself in trouble. Don't want to max them. I'll save them for emergencies," said Bryan Packer.

A frugal yet festive time nevertheless. One that's more about the meaning than receiving.

"Just really one to be more wise, not wanting to go into debt for the holiday because that's not what Christmas is about anyway," said Kimberly Williams.

Still, there will no doubt be a lot of happy people out there. Carina's seven-year-old daughter included.

"I've been to Wyandotte. I've been to Melvindale, and then I came here. So, I finally got it," said Cushingberry.

If you still haven't found that Zhu Zhu pet yet, you might not be out of luck. Walmart is expected to have thousands in starting on Monday.
