SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) - DPS Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobb on Wednesday released a list of 45 Detroit public schools that could be converted to charter schools. It's part of the district's Renaissance 2012 Plan.

Of those 45, 18 will close this summer if an acceptable charter proposal is not submitted for those schools.

The remaining 27 will remain open under a turnaround plan and will either be operated as a charter school or by DPS.

The plan calls for the closure and consolidation of eight schools. In addition, eight new schools will be opening and replacing 14 existing schools for a net reduction of six schools.

The district says the schools identified had low academic performance, low or declining enrollment, high operational costs, poor physical conditions or a combination of those issues.

The state is mandating that DPS close 70 schools over two years. The district hopes this plan will reduce the number of closures and resulting abandoned buildings while lowering operating costs.

DPS currently operates 141 schools.
