Livonia Man's Body Discovered After His Dog Leads Motorist to Find Him

LIVONIA, Mich. (WJBK) -- A Livonia woman was driving home from the grocery store when she noticed a dog alongside the road. It was barking and acting frantic. She was worried it was going to get hit by a car, so she stopped to help. That dog led her into the woods, down to the creek and to her owner.

Mark Mohacsi gave Spice a forever home. He adopted the mutt from the Michigan Humane Society about a year ago. She repaid him by giving him back to his family.

"I think she's quite amazing for what she did," said Mary Mohacsi, Mark's mom.

Friday afternoon, Mark left his parent's Livonia home to take Spice for a walk. That was the last time they saw the 52-year-old.

"We really just assumed he was over at his friend's house. We had no way of knowing," said Ted Mohacsi, Mark's father.

No way of knowing about a mile away their son somehow ended up in a creek. His body was only discovered because of Spice.

The lady that stopped to help wrote a letter to Mark's family.

"I want you to know ... that dog was frantic to get help to his master. I can't explain to you how touched I was to see this animal all but flag me down and force me into the woods," read Katie Kumm, Mark's niece.

"He would still be there I would think if she hadn't done that," Mary Mohacsi said.

Once police arrived, Spice ran away. Mark's family thought she was gone for good, then despite not knowing the area very well, she came barking into their lives once again.

"3:30 in the morning, she's at the gate barking away," Mary Mohacsi explained.

"They bring a lot of pleasure and comfort to people, really," said Ted Mohacsi.

Mark's family still isn't certain how or when he died or how long his body was alongside the creek. They want to honor his memory and his love for dogs by asking people to make donations to the Michigan  Humane Society so other dogs like Spice can be saved.
